Why does it sound masochistic? Are you thinking the verse says that we should seek out abuse? That wouldn’t be very helpful, and it’s not necessary; abuse seems to have a way of finding us. People are going to criticize you however you behave, and when they do, be big enough to take the criticism with dignity, like a battle elephant.
